DG Garry Vokes DG Garry Vokes
I am Garry Vokes, a retired postal supervisor with 39+ years of service. After I graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines, Iowa, I started working for the post office. PDG Zane Vokes and I married in 1976 .After graduating from Drake University with a BA in liberal arts degree with a major in earth science in 1978 we started our family. We have three sons, Erik, Kristofor and Michael.

When my oldest son wanted to join cub scouts we went to an organizational meeting where we learned that a den leader was needed. Thus began my community service when I became a den leader for my sonís cub scout den. Being a den leader, for me also being involved in cub scout day camps. My wife and I travelled to Camp Rotary in Michigan so the we could become certified as day camp directors. As time passed and my other two sons became old enough we continued into boy scouting as well as cub scouting. By then my wife and I were part of the district training team for both boy scouts as well as cub scouts. We earned our wood badge beads in order to gain more knowledge about scouting. During this time I served as president of the church council of Unity Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

In 1996, Zane was asked to join the Clive Lions and she asked me, in early 1997, to join also. Thus my association with Lions was initiated. The first couple years I mostly sat on the sidelines quietly observing the Lions. Then I was voted in as tail twister. After a couple years of tail twisting I moved up in the ranks of Lionism. I became a third vice president and then up the line to president. After a couple more years of doing odd projects with the club, I was asked by the district governor to be on their cabinet as diabetes chairperson. When Zane became District Governor, I served as the cabinet secretary and treasurer while also being a zone chair.

Knowing that I believed in the service that Lions provide to their community, be it local or global, I decided to run for the office of 2nd Vice District Governor. After being 2nd Vice District Governor, I had no choice but to run for the 1st Vice District Governorís position.

I will be the District Governor for District 9MC for the year 2015/2016. At present Iím taking the Lions University courses and have all but completed my Bachelorís Degree and some Masterís Degree courses. I believe that with the help, courage and dedication of the Lions of 9MC we will be the best district for 2015Ė2016. I have a great cabinet and we all share the same vision; we serve, and by serving, we serve God and our country.
